Main description
Small secret streets winding towards open perspectives with dramatic effect, sumptuous palaces with dynamic sculptures and a profusion of decorative details, churches with domes rising to the sky, terraced gardens with sculptures and fountains...
The entire district is an expression of the triumph of Baroque, which was introduced in the 17th century after the ravages of the Thirty Years’ War, and which flourished in the 18th century throughout Bohemia. Its most beautiful gardens (the Wallenstein garden, the Vrtba garden...), still rustle with the baroque celebrations which were organized there, witnesses of a brilliant aristocratic art of living.
At the center of this sumptuous theatrical scene, the St. Nicholas Church, a masterpiece of the Dientzenhofer brothers, with its dynamic, undulating facade and majestic dome, is undoubtedly one of the most successful achievements of Baroque architecture in the world.
