Main description
Karlovy Vary was founded in the 14th century by Charles IV, who granted the town privileges. It also takes its name from the monarch. Karlovy Vary enjoyed its greatest fame during the 19th century and the Belle Époque. The mild climate, the beneficial effects of thermal springs and the town’s vibrant social life attracted leading aristocrats, artists and scientists from all over Central Europe.
Karlovy Vary nestles in a valley through which the River Teplá flows, and dense forests surround the town on all sides. Breath-taking architecture remains from the golden age. Elegant colonnades linking curative thermal springs, imposing spa buildings, and luxury hotels create an extraordinary urban setting.
