South gardens below the Prague Castle

The South Gardens of the Prague Castle were gradually built on the site of the fortifications of the Castle and today offer a breathtaking view of Prague.

After the most recent reconstruction in 2012, they have returned to their original form of the 1920s, when they were laid out for the first Czechoslovak president T. G. Masaryk by Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik, who created a uniform geometric concept of paths, rectangular lawns, irregularly spaced trees and other landscaping and architectural features.

The southern gardens are almost 500 metres long and, during the summer season, can be accessed from Opiš through the eastern gate or via the bull staircase from the third courtyard, under the St Vitus Catherdal.

The garden is open from 1 April to 31 October.
