The Czech Republic is a country located in a temperate climate zone. This means that it is cold in winter and hot in summer. In summer, there can be significant temperature differences: it is relatively cool in the morning and evening but very hot during the day. Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant seasons.
However, it is difficult to give precise weather forecasts due to the frequent temperature inversions, which are strengthening with climate change. The average temperatures given below are for information purposes only.
Is there really a best season to visit the city of Prague? In summer? When the days are warm and sunny and all the outdoor terraces are open? In the middle of autumn? If you want to avoid the crowds of tourists and enjoy the city of Prague in beautiful colours and with the weather amplifying the mysterious side of historic Prague? In winter, to see the snow-covered roofs of the city and experience the magic of the Christmas and New Year’s Eve period or to pamper yourself in the warmth of the spa? Or in spring, to walk in the parks and in the sublime flower gardens and to soak up the romantic atmosphere of Prague?
In short, as you will have understood, for us, each season has a unique and particular charm. It’s up to you to choose which one you want to discover!
Is the weather not ideal? Don’t worry! Prague offers so many indoor activities that you’ll have another problem: which one to choose first. Here are some ideas:
And finally, don’t forget that our guided tours take place no matter the weather—we’re not made of sugar! :) As the saying goes: There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.
Although spring begins on March 20, this month is the rainiest of the year. Be sure to bring your k-ways! The Czechs have a saying: "March without rain is April without greenery". Temperatures remain quite low. Bring warm clothes. It is at the end of March that most of the castles and fortresses in the province reopen to the public (except, for example, the Karlštejn Castle, which remains open all year round, although with limited opening hours in winter).
Average temperatures are between 0°C and 8°C.
In April, the temperatures start to ease. The trees are budding and the gardens are opening to the public. This is a great opportunity to discover hidden places in the city, which are always closed in winter. Be careful, because the famous English proverb also applies to the Czech Republic: "Ne'er cast a clout til May be out."
Average temperatures range from 4°C to 13°C.
May in Prague has an ideal climate and mild temperatures. The trees and gardens are in bloom and many Prague residents start to sit on the terraces and drink a good beer.
May can sometimes be very rainy, so pack a k-way or umbrella.
Average temperatures range from 9°C to 19°C.
Prague in summer
June is a sunny month in Prague. The hot weather has not yet arrived, but expect heavy thunderstorms with rain, especially at the end of the day. It is the rainiest month of the year.
June also marks the beginning of the outdoor music festival season.
Average temperatures range from 12°C to 22°C.
July is the hottest month of the year in the Czech Republic. Temperatures can sometimes rise to 40°C, which is, we admit, difficult to bear in the middle of the city. Fortunately, there are plenty of water activities on the Vltava River to cool down and the swimming pools in Prague are also a solution if you are too hot. Pack a bottle of water and sunscreen in your backpack!
Average temperatures are between 14°C and 24°C.
August in Prague is generally cooler than July, although temperatures remain high. At the end of the day, the temperatures are more pleasant to enjoy a nice evening on the terrace. Heavy thunderstorms sometimes appear, accompanied by rain. In August 2002, the city of Prague was hit by very heavy flooding, which damaged a large part of the capital.
Average temperatures range from 14°C to 23°C.
Autumn has arrived but the temperatures are still very pleasant for long walks in the city. Be sure to bring waterproof clothing as it may rain on you.
For food lovers, there are many festivals in September, such as the Burgerfest or the Asia food fest.
Average temperatures are between 10°C and 19°C.
October is a rather rainy month and the temperatures start to drop. You will discover the city of Prague in the beautiful colours of autumn.
Traditional Czech festivals mark this period, as well as children’s kite flying. You can also take part in the Prague Coffee Festival, the Signal Festival of Lights and many other cultural events.
Average temperatures range from 6°C to 13°C.
November is the month when you can say that it is cold in Prague! It may even snow lightly, as has been the case in recent years. Make sure you bring warm clothes. The 11th of November is the Feast of Saint Martin: Saint Martin is said to arrive on a white horse, representing the snow. On this occasion, you can taste the traditional dish: Saint Martin’s goose served with knedlíky (dumplings) and red cabbage. Here is a list of some restaurants with Czech cuisine in Prague where you can sit down to make sure you don’t miss this specialty.
Many cultural events are scheduled, such as the French film festival or the Prague Sounds, an international festival of a high-quality music featuring a variety of genres.
Average temperatures range from 2°C to 6°C.
Christmas is coming! Prague is a very lively city during the preparations for the festive season, which is very important in the Czech Republic. The streets are illuminated and a large decorated tree stands on the Old Town Square, around which the Christmas market is set up every year. At least, mulled wine or punch will warm you up if you are not sufficiently equipped with winter clothing, which is really necessary at this time of year.
Unfortunately, in recent years, Christmas holidays have been without snow, although ice patches do appear. Be especially careful at pedestrian crossings and in the city center, where cobblestones can be slippery!
Average temperatures range from -2 °C to 2 °C.
January is a month with little sunshine. It is cold (it is the coldest month of the year) and temperatures can sometimes drop very low (to -10°C). Make sure you have good shoes and warm clothes to protect you from the snow. If you are lucky enough to discover Prague under the snow, enjoy the magic, which does not last long because the snow does not hold and usually melts very quickly. Ladies, forget about high heels – and especially stilettos – on the cobblestones, which make up most of the sidewalks in historic Prague, especially in this weather.
Average temperatures range from -4°C to 1°C.
Like January, February is a relatively cold month. It depends on the year, but some days can be very sunny. Even if you are very cold, a day in the sun is always very pleasant!
Average temperatures are between -3 °C and 2 °C.
